About Nova Scotia Politics In June of 2009, Nova Scotians elected a majority NDP government for the first time in our history. The election was about change above all else. Halifax Chebucto is now represented by a member on the government side of the legislature. Nova Scotia House of Assembly The Nova Scotia Legislature makes laws and oversees the administration of services in areas of provincial responsibility. This includes such important matters as health and health care, public education, community services, labour relations and occupational health and safety, environmental protection and remediation, agriculture and natural resources. Since June 9, 2009, the New Democratic Party is the elected government. Party standings are as follows:
Nova Scotia’s NDP Caucus The NDP Caucus is how we refer to the group of NDP MLAs. Of the 52 seats in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly there are 31 NDP MLAs. New Democrats represent constituencies from every region of Nova Scotia. Premier Darrell Dexter has established the government's Executive Council delegating ministerial responsibilities to a small group of twelve in the Cabinet.
